My first stop of the day was visiting the Dwr Cymru Welsh Water facility in St Mellons, where I officially opened their ‘Smart Hub’. This Hub allows staff to monitor the network across Wales and the areas they cover in England, checking for damaged pipes, malfunctions in pumping stations and even maintaining the safety of their staff – 24/7!
I also had the pleasure of hearing from GMB Members who have benefitted from the Welsh Union Learners Fund through their employment in W…elsh Water. It was great to hear of the benefit the programme has had to so many learners and the level of support provided by the GMB Union and Wales TUC Cymru.
With 573 learners gaining over 1100 qualifications between them in a range of subjects from literacy and numeracy, to ICT and communications, it is clear how much benefit there is to the WULF. Adult Learners today told me how gaining qualifications through this programme has built their confidence in their professional and personal lives, as well as improving their skill-set. They also told me how their new-found skills has even allowed them to support their own loved ones in developing their skills.
